Sorry...no new pages lately...
I was commissioned to do a cover recently for Frank Fradella’s “Swan Song” ( a damn good book too I might add )...once I manage to get it wrangled and roped in I’ll be back to normal...covers are unique beasts...so much rides on them, the responsibility is a bit suffocating...I’m never more in doubt of myself than when doing a cover...anyhoo...I’ll do my best and try to get back on track soon...
...
Went fishing this morning...a much needed peaceful easy feel’n...sweet, sharp baby-blue atmosphere, fallen clouds and mist coasting in the boat’s lazy wake like the smoke through a crack in the teacher’s lounge...pretty nice.
...
In other news...I’ve been miss’n something lately...quite a bit of ‘lately’ actually...my journal-comic...( UM in the Coil )
Managed to complete roughly 154 pages and then about 8 additional larger pages before shelving it...but, it’s nearly fall - and for a Scorpio like myself, that’s as good as the season of fearlessness ( as any season can hope to be ).
I don’t have the server space to upload the whole kooky thing...but it’s not so important to know all that came before...suffice to say that it was a successful failure...honest, blunt and candid...pretentious, at times confusing and self serving...in other words, a drifting, shiftless journal-comic mess that I’ve no shame in plunging back into...at least occasionally.
I have no clue what direction to take from here...not specifically anyhoo...but that’s not so important either..heh
...
Anyhoo...here is a short flashback of where I left off. ( noth’n new here for some of you )

LOL. SO I pop over here and see the very pages I said I'd like to see sometime.

I have to tell you, these blow me away. What you do with the layout on these pages as a way of communicating so many different themes and concepts within the context of the narrative is just fucking amazing. So jaw droppingly well executed it floors me. I think you really use the medium of comics. It would be easy enough to write a simple narrative of your day, but you get so much more meaning out of how you convey the moment in the images and layouts you choose.

It makes me rethink what comics can do in telling really personal stories. They can be visually exciting and do things that you can't do in film or even straight prose.

hey, thanks Sean...:)
yep, I no sooner typed reply before setting about posting these...it'd been on my mind for days ( months ) now.
and thanks about the layouts...sometimes it's 'hit and miss'...at times, the experimentation can backfire and just be confusing...heh...but with this project, I never minded the 'misses' too much...mostly, i think i just wanted to slow the reader down a little bit...make them look around, take their time...
for my money, the real master of page design and storytelling, an artist who really shook me up and shook me loose is Chris Ware...his pages are often times a playground of shapes and images...he can do no wrong...:)

Agreed. Ware is awesome.

I think where I get bogged down, when it comes to thinking of writing for comics (and artists), is that I feel the discussion always boils down to technique versus content, that you can't have a discussion about what a comic writer is trying to say that doesn't end up being a disection of their craftsmanship. I think what these pages remind me is that the two things aren't neccessarily exclusive, even though alot of people discuss them as if they are.

That bogged marriage between technique content...sometimes it’s necessary, even if it is just self-imposed...like with “drock” , I’ve certainly given myself a lot of elbow-room as far as content is concerned, but the technique I’ve established leaves little room for error...which certainly weighs on me...still, I get no shortage of my creative-jonze throughout the process ( as it’s still largely one big experiment )

#1. YEAH DAVE! You MOOCH! I bet you got your grubby fingerprints all over the comics in your local shop!

#2. Dude(Andrew)! Please set up a paypal account. Your work is of the caliber that would generate some cash from your loyal readers. Even if only a hundred of us contributed just a buck a month, that's a hunnerd bones more than what you got right now. every month. I'D contribute a buck a month. (Don't count on Dave, though.)

I miss Uminthecoil too.
I find it a bit more accessible than Drockleberry. Okay, I admit it, I find Drockleberry confusing and cryptic - still it is visually entertaining though, don't get me wrong.
And though I find UM cryptic at times as well, it just has... i dunno, like anyone could walk into it and appreciate some of what it has to offer. accessible.
am i off base here?

Hey buddy I just wanted to say thank you again for the pieces you got done for me. The guys at my game loved them, and it gave the whole experience that little something extra. I can't wait to talk to you about the spot illustrations when your schedule clears up. PLUS, I still want you to get a chance to play this game sometime.

ALL OF YOU GUYS AND GALS that dig his work let me know if you're ever in the KOKOMO INDIANA AREA, and maybe we can drag ol boy out to play a game of CALL OF CTHULHU for the night. I gurantee some interesting characters, and a fun night of cheap style theater!

How big are the individual pages? Can you burn them on CDs or would it take too many? Would you want them on individual pages or clustered in groups? I was thinking of just creating a storehouse for your stuff - maybe you want to do that until you feel like learning to do webpages. Or you could create and maintain something now - it's up to you. Let me know how you would want to do it and we'll work out something to do it that way.
Kevin
